Full of tenderness and understanding."--New York TimesAn "extraordinary" (Oprah Daily) memoir about the friendship between a solitary woman and a wild fox. When Catherine Raven finished her PhD in biology, she built herself a tiny cottage on an isolated plot of land in Montana. She was as emotionally isolated as she was physically, but she viewed the house as a way station, a temporary rest stop where she could gather her nerves and fill out applications for what she hoped would be a real job that would help her fit into society. In the meantime, she taught remotely and led field classes in nearby Yellowstone National Park. Then one day she realized that a mangy-looking fox was showing up on her property every afternoon at 4:15 p.m. She had never had a regular visitor before. How do you even talk to a fox? She brought out her camping chair, sat as close to him as she dared, and began reading to him from The Little Prince. Her scientific training had taught her not to anthropomorphize animals, yet as she grew to know him, his personality revealed itself and they became friends. From the fox, Catherine learned the single most important thing about loneliness: we are never alone when we are connected to the natural world. Friends, however, cannot save each other from the uncontained forces of nature.Fox and I is a poignant and remarkable tale of friendship, growth, and coping with inevitable loss--and of how that loss can be transformed into meaning. It is both a timely tale of solitude and belonging as well as a timeless story of one woman whose immersion in the natural world will change the way we view our surroundings--each tree, weed, flower, stone, or fox.

The Kingdom Where Nobody Dies【電子書籍】[ Audrey Borenstein ]

Echoes of the fatal shots fired in Dallas on November 22, 1963 reverberate in this collection of seven stories set in Louisiana during the civil rights era. For a varied cast of characters--the artist in the title story who tells the tale of his sojourn at LSU during Kennedy's "brief and shining moment" through a retrospective of his paintings; the schoolteacher soon to be married grieving with her mother over the shattered dream of a charmed and happy First Family's life; the disabled man witnessing the killing of Oswald on the TV screen with a growing premonition of the coming darkness in the world; the lawyer, son of a Southern-born mother and a Yankee father, reliving the loss of his beloved wife in mourning the nation's loss; the African-American wife of a preacher praying to the ghost of her dead mother for solace; the woman who, in moving her family away, feels the place reach out and pull them back; the young couple transplanted from the Midwest entranced by the fairy-tale beauty and amusements of their new life who become caught up in the social upheaval of the times--the violent death of our youngest President is a crucible for the dawning of historical consciousness in the wake of the nation's loss of innocence. An Afterword traces the genesis and the thirty-three-year journey to the publication of this book of stories.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

U.S.S. Cairo: The Story Of A Civil War Gunboat【電子書籍】[ Virgil Carrington Jones ]

Foreword: "For 11 years, I was closely associated with the Cairo project, and I know how difficult it is to place the undertaking in its proper perspective and to dispassionately evaluate its historical significance. I was accordingly delighted to learn that Virgil Carrington Jones, who needs no introduction to readers interested in Civil War partisan operations and action afloat, had agreed to chronicle the story of the Cairo and her rendezvous with destiny on the Yazoo in December 1862; and that Harold L. Peterson, whose publications on arms and armament are legion, would survey, describe, and evaluate the thousands of artifacts recovered. Jones and Peterson, as the readers of this booklet will discover, have written of the Cairo and her treasure trove of artifacts with keen insight and understanding. Their accounts will spark the reader's interest, and, in conjunction with the salvaged objects themselves, lead to a better understanding of how bluejackets lived and fought in our Civil War."
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。

Real Vampires: When Glory Met Jerry【電子書籍】[ Gerry Bartlett ]

A mysterious past, a desperate present and an uncertain future. What’s a girl to do?

Young widow Gloriana St. Clair has lost everythingーher memory, her husband, even the pallet where she’d been sleeping since her money ran out. Near starvation, she’s forced to try her luck in the alley next to the Globe Theater. With her curves displayed in a borrowed dress, maybe she can attract a generous and caring protector to support her.

Jeremiah Campbell is drawn to Gloriana immediately and makes his move. The handsome Scot certainly catches her eye and even buys her a meat pie when he hears her empty stomach rumbling. Glory decides she has no choice but to go with him when he offers his arm for a “stroll.” At least his eyes are kind. But an attack by thugs soon shows her that this man can also be dangerous. When she sees his fangs? Well, surely she imagined them. Because vampires aren’t real, are they?

This prequel to the Real Vampires series begins the love story between vampire Jeremiah Campbell and mortal Gloriana St. Clair in 1604 London. You can follow Glory’s adventures starting with the first book in the long-running series, Real Vampires Have Curves, available at e-tailers everywhere. La Paz's Colonial Specters Urbanization, Migration, and Indigenous Political Participation, 1900-52【電子書籍】[ Assistant Pro..

This original study examines a vital but neglected aspect of the 1952 National Revolution in Bolivia; the activism of urban inhabitants. Many of these activists were Aymara-speaking people of indigenous origin who transformed the urban environment, politics and place of “ind?genas” and “neighbors” within the city of La Paz. Luis Sierra traces how these urban residents faced racial discrimination and marginalization despite their political support for the Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR). La Paz's Colonial Specters reassesses the contingent, relational nature of Bolivia's racial categories and the artificial division between urban and rural activists.

Building on rich established historiography on the indigenous people of Bolivia, Luis Sierra breaks new ground in showing the role of the neighborhoods in the process of urbanization, and builds upon analysis of the ways in which race, gender and class discourse shaped migrants interactions with other urban residents. Questioning how and why this multiclass and multi-ethnic group continued to be labelled by elites and the state as “un-modern” indigena, the author uses La Paz to demonstrate the ways in which race, class, and gender intertwine in urbanization and in conceptions of the city and nation.

Of interest to scholars, researchers and advanced students of Latin American history, urban history, the history of activism and the history of ethnic conflict, this unique study covers the previously neglected first half of the 20th century to shed light on the urban development of La Paz and its racial and political divides.
画面が切り替わりますので、しばらくお待ち下さい。
